brand refresh+website design : kristy dooley {beth wade photography charlotte}

By | photography workshops, website design | No Comments

I’m so excited to share this post today! On a very limited basis I am now offering custom boutique branding and website design services for photographers. For most photographers, they can get a great start on their business and websites with my Basic WordPress and Website Creation class through Click PhotoSchool. But when the time comes for a refresh or redesign, sometimes getting that new look exactly perfect takes a little more time and effort! I just recently added this service and timing was great because my sweet friend, Kristy of Kristy Dooley Photography was looking to do a refresh of her own brand and website.

This was her old website:

When Kristy contacted me she was ready for a new look for her logo, brand colors and site design. Something that was more sophisticated and professional but still unique and fun! Her current brand incorporated lots of brighter tones (pink, aqua and navy) and after seeing her brand inspiration board we made a change towards more muted greens, grays and light pink tones.

For her logo, she chose various fonts she liked and I recommended the one I thought would be most appropriate for a “refresh”.  After comparing all the options there was no question it was the winner! I also pulled various new patterns and design elements to use in her designs. She didn’t want to go too neutral because her work is so vibrant and rich, but we also wanted to create a site where the photos would be center stage!

Here is her final new brand board:

Some of the big changes we made to her website:

  • wider layout with custom background, design elements and thumbnails
  • new social icons, contact buttons and custom brand color accents
  • smaller more streamlined membership icons
  • updated page verbiage and custom design for about, testimonials, session details and a new “learn” page for her workshops
  • sleek new contact form with consistent linking throughout every page of her site

Because your brand extends all the way into your products and packaging, Kristy added on a print design option where I created new sticker designs, return address labels, business cards and thank you notes. I love how these turned out! She ordered her beautiful new printed material from the fabulous vendor MOO.

Once we get the site complete I have a 1:1 video chat to go over the basics for maintaining the new site, making small changes, etc. Kristy also has a month of support from me with any help she needs making changes or updating the content!

Do you need a brand refresh or website redesign? Contact me for details!

charlotte nc – lake wylie sc | 2014 newborn photography workshop {meg bitton ~ pebbles and polka dots photography}

By | ~, photography workshops

Today was the final day of Meg Bitton & Pebbles and Polka Dots Photographys photography workshop at my home in Lake Wylie. There are no words that can truly describe this experience, but I am going to try.

It was about this time last year when I discovered Meg and Mary. Their work is honest, powerful and emotive. Each time I see one of their photos pop up in my newsfeed I stop to look – every.single.time. They each have a very recognizable, consistent style, yet the images they create always seem fresh and new. This is exactly what I dreamed of for my own photography. Getting the opportunity to not only learn from them, but meet them and host their maternity/newborn/child workshop has been life-changing.

After everyone parted ways today I came home and finally sat down to pull up my images from the past 2 days. I felt amazed, exhausted, a little unhinged, energized and SO so happy. This is the first in-person photography workshop I have taken and I don’t know how things usually go, but I can not imagine a more intense growth opportunity than what we learned this week. Here is a brief breakdown of all my feelings.

~ amazed ~

Without meeting Meg and Mary, their insane amount of talent is clear. But the thing that amazed me most was to see how they do it all – family, kids, work, teaching, travel and still totally grounded. They are smart, business minded women who have created their own success. Running your own business isn’t easy…at all. There is SO much time and resource that goes into it. New photographers are popping up every day, yet are similarly burning out because they don’t understand all the things that you have to consider. There is a big difference between just being a photographer who works and making a career out of photography. It was amazing to learn about why they created their unique business models and how they make it work. No fear, no excuses. Their heart and soul goes into everything they do.

~ exhausted ~

Every single muscle in my body hurts – in the BEST way. A common misconception is that photographers just “click a button”. How hard can that be? Really. Let me tell you – if you want those amazing images, be prepared to sweat and get dirty. On the first day we were up to our ears in water. Second day, we sweated it out in my 85+ degree studio, then moved outside to a nearby forest and field in 90+ degree June weather. Mosquitos, ants, grass and a little rain didn’t slow us down for a minute.

~ unhinged ~

The best teachers are those that want you to grow and learn. They help you do that by giving you new ideas, more effective ways of reaching a goal, sharing what they have learned along their journey and what piece of your puzzle is missing. Then they tell you how to find that piece, where to look and how to excel. This is how Meg and Mary teach. If you show them a photo they tell you how to fix it, what you did right and if you did anything wrong. I think that a reeeally good workshop should unhinge you – take you out of your comfort zone and push you into a whole new light. There were so many takeaways that my mind is spinning and I can not WAIT to bring their wisdom into my own creative process.

~ energized ~

As an artist it is verrrry easy to get in a rut, second guess yourself, lose inspiration. But the passion and drive that they brought to us was contagious. Their vision for their own work and seeing beauty in unexpected places was a huge eye-opener. Meg and Mary do not teach you how to be like them, they teach you how to be YOU. An artist that creates what you LOVE, stands by it and doesn’t bend to naysayers. They instill a level of confidence that is truly energizing.

~ happy ~

Yes, we worked hard. But we laughed hard too. Meg and Mary have been doing workshops together for a while and their dynamic is nothing short of amazing. It was awesome learning from them, but equally awesome learning about them and hearing their stories. I think it’s safe to say they left here with a few new ones of their own. 🙂

Here are a few of my favorite images from the workshop. I can not thank them enough for their guidance and kindness. Absolutely priceless.  <3

website workshop for photographers ~ internet marketing, seo and online presence {beth wade for clickin moms}

By | ~, photography workshops

Tomorrow is the first day of registration for my Clickin’ Moms Business 202 course!! The first run of my website workshop Wordpress, SEO and Online Presence in March 2014 went GREAT. 🙂 Actually, it sold out <3 (please make sure to read some kind words and glowing reviews in the forum of the first class)!!

All the ladies I worked with were absolutely AH-mazing. They also worked their tails off. SO much so that for this next run we decided to split the material into TWO classes, a 100 and 200 level. This also allowed me to go back and add more detailed content to each new class for some of the most popular topics in the first class. 🙂

——

  • Since your business and brand is uniquely individual to YOU, I do a great deal of personalized analysis and video feedback in 102 and 202. For this reason, I strongly recommend doing Full Participation! However, both classes will now be offered in Full Participation (FP $300) and Study Along (SA $150).
  • All graduates from the 200 level will be added to our BZ202 Facebook group! The idea behind the group is to have a place where everyone who graduates from the class can keep up with each other, ask business and class related questions, get critique or feedback, promote their page posts and share progress! We discuss forum topics, share things that are going well and working, and also things that we may be struggling with (because more often than not, you’re not alone!!).

Now, here is the new breakdown!

~

The 200 level* (BZ202) is Business 202: Internet Marketing, SEO & Online Presence and begins 7.14.14:

Is your website an accurate reflection of your brand and your work?

Does it attract your target clientele?

Do you appear in a Google search for your city and genre of photography?

If your answer is not “Yes” then BZ202 is for you 🙂

This course is an advanced level 4 week program that focuses on building your photography business through internet marketing and using your website as your 24/7 online salesperson. You will get a complete online portfolio analysis, detailed overview of site statistics, marketing your business on social media, SEO tactics for improving rank and how to create a Google Adwords campaign. This course is ideal for any photographer looking to improve your current website, boost your online presence and generate new leads from your target market.

{Registration information and full course details can be found on my cmuniversity course page.}

What we cover: ~Week1- Writing Page Content and Blog Posts for SEO ~Week2- Complete Online Portfolio Analysis, Maintaining/Updating Your Galleries ~Week3- Engaging New Clients, Creating a Welcome Guide, Client Galleries, Online Ordering ~Week4- Site Statistics, Social Media Marketing, SEO Tactics, Creating a Google Adwords Campaign  What you get: ~weekly lessons in the form of multi-media PDFs ~weekly assignments, detailed feedback from peers and CMpro TAs ~personalized video feedback & tutorials

*Prerequisites:

~Photographers need to have a current website, feel established in their style and have confidence in their portfolio. Students without a website need to complete BZ102 before BZ202. ~There will be additional expenses (outside of the CM tuition) related to creating a client welcome guide IF you decide to purchase a template. PS, PSE or PowerPoint (Microsoft Office or MS Office for Mac) is required to design your own template. Plan to set aside a minimum of $4 per day for your Adwords Program.   business 202: internet marketing, seo & online presence

——-

The 100 level** (BZ102) is Business 102: Basic WordPress & Website Creation and begins 9.22.14:

Do you have a unique, professional website to display your photography online?

Does your business have a strong name, brand and custom URL?

Do you know how to create a simple text logo, custom header, blog posts and pages?

If your answer is not “Yes” then BZ102 is for you 🙂

This beginner level class focuses on how to create a basic WordPress blog and portfolio. In 3 weeks, we will intensively cover every aspect of how to design and build a gorgeous, user-friendly website from scratch. This course is ideal for any photographer who is looking to start a brand new blog and website or simply needs a more in-depth understanding of how to use WordPress.

{Registration information and full course details can be found on my cmuniversity course page.}

What we cover: ~Week1- Choosing Your Vendor, Custom URL, Your Brand, Goals for Your Website ~Week2- Navigating the Dashboard, SEO Friendly Site Structure, Customizations (CSS, Color, Font, Logo/Header, Widgets) ~Week3- Adding Content for Pages and Blog Posts, Establishing a Contact Form and Portfolio Gallery What you get: ~weekly lessons in the form of multi-media PDFs ~weekly assignments, detailed feedback from peers and CMpro TAs ~personalized video feedback & tutorials

**Prerequisites:

~Photographers will need a software design program (Photoshop Elements or CS6 recommended). ~There will be additional expenses (outside of the CM tuition) related to your URL/domain registration, hosting, WordPress themes and selecting a vendor (Creative Motion Design, ProPhoto, etc.) if you choose to do so. Average costs range from $50-$300. We will discuss these options in detail during Week 1.

Eeeek! I am absolutely thrilled to share a new custom product I will be offering to my clients! I have been looking for the perfect wall display, something that is a simply perfect fit with my photography style. Finally, I found it and I’m so in LOVE!! My clients (past and current) can now display their images as a Fine Art Watercolor Framed Print. <3

Watercolor painting is very near and dear to my heart. My father encouraged me to sign up for a watercolor art class in high school and it quickly be can a favorite pastime.

The look that watercolor painting creates is unique ~ soft – textured – dreamy – luminous ~ yet similar to my photography style.

I am pleased to offer this custom piece of art that bridges my two creative passions. I have several displayed in the studio now but here are a few more product detail photos (which don’t do it ANY justice :)) Contact me for additional information!!

website workshop for photographers ~ wordpress, seo and online presence {beth wade for clickin moms}

By | ~, photography workshops

I can’t believe it is already March and the first run of my website workshop is almost here!! WordPress, SEO and Online Presence is a brand new workshop that I will be teaching for Clickin’ Moms. I have spent months creating this course material from scratch and I can’t even tell y’all how excited I am 🙂

Registration information can be found on my cmuniversity course page. But I wanted to highlight some specifics of the class and everything that we will be covering over the 4 weeks. My class is designed to help photographers that are starting out a new website completely from scratch, OR photographers that already have a site but need to do a re-brand, redesign or just learn how to market themselves effectively online.

Is your website an accurate reflection of your brand and your work?

Does it attract your target clientele?

Do you appear in a Google search for your city and genre of photography?

If your answer is not “Yes” then my website workshop is for you 🙂

WordPress, SEO and Online Presence focuses on the creation, customization and marketing of your blog and portfolio sites. Whether you are a hobbyist or in business, this course covers every aspect of developing a gorgeous, user-friendly website. Photographers don’t need to be bogged down with website development. We just need to know the most efficient, effective way to display our work beautifully and functionally online.

In Week 1~

we talk a lot about branding and reaching your target client. Week 1 is also review of blog basics, color theory as it relates to your brand and website design, choosing your business name, how to pick the best URL and several other topics related to building your business effectively through your website.

In Week 2~

we get into page content and good blog writing for SEO. So if you are doing your own blogging this info will be very valuable. This will give you tips for how to blog quickly, how often, what to post and how to/not to format it.

In Week 3~

we talk about your portfolio, which images to display, the best order to display them, how to arrange your galleries, setting up your title/description/metadata to be specific per page, how to actually keep up with updating your portfolio images and the impact that NOT updating has on growing your client base.

In Week 4~

we talk about SEO related to social media and link building, plus how to market yourself on Google Adwords for the lowest cost, the impact it has on your SEO efforts, how to handle and respond to new online inquiries to increase your booking % and the best ways to display and introduce your pricing when dealing over email.

It’s a LOT of info, but I can’t wait to work with the awesome ladies who have registered for March! I’ll be breaking down alllll the details of blog and portfolio websites with video tutorials and PDFs that walk you through everything. In addition, because each student can choose the vendor they prefer I’ll be doing a lot of individualized tutorials too.

2014 newborn photography workshop - charlotte nc lake wylie sc

“Meg Bitton, Souls.Imagined and Pebbles and Polka Dots Photography have teamed up AGAIN to bring you 3 different retreat workshops in 2014 that will change your photography forever. At these workshops, we will be setting up scenes NEVER seen before with props exclusive to this workshop. All newborn props and model clothing will be one of a kind.

Meg and Mary are so excited to release the details on these amazing retreats celebrating the art of capturing the soul from where it begins to where it flourishes. Join us for these events as we explore maternity, newborn and child photography under the halo of forest trees, and learn how to capture your newborn in the studio with lights to get that natural organic look.

Are you struggling with posing your pregnant client and creating comfort so she’ll reveal bare skin? This retreat will help you create an artistic photo of that Mama and not just take a photo of her belly. Feel confident before the session even starts after learning what I have to deliver. Get comfortable with shooting a newborn in studio, and learn Mary’s workflow to capture every pose in under 2 hours with ease. Watch our workflow as we go from shot to shot with the newborn and his/her parents. Walk with us as we explore the grounds and how we choose where to shoot and which props to use. Watch our soothing techniques, and how to get the newborn session completed smoothly. No more struggles with lighting and where to place it to find that wow effect. Do you wish you could get those gorgeous glowing photos, silhouette shots, and flowing fabric shots and not sure where to start? Wish you could try new angles and techniques? This is the workshop for you!!!

Be confident in offering maternity, newborn, and child sessions. Book more newborns by getting your name out there with the expectant Mamas in your area. Increase your income by offering gorgeous Maternity packages to your Newborn sessions! And ultimately book way more newborns when future clients see how amazing your outdoor newborn photos are.

Carry all that into your childrens sessions as well. Learn from the most beautiful child photographer there is, Meg Bitton. Capture your clients in their essence of themselves. Get away from all that posing and smiling at the camera. Let the children dance, play and run free and learn how to get the portraits that make your clients squeal with delight and want to order prints as large as the come.

Last year was my first attempt at photographing fireworks on the 4th of July – now it’s a slight obsession of mine (along with the photographing the moon! thanks to my photography bucket list…).   Our neighborhood in Lake Wylie backs up to Camp Thunderbird and every year the camp throws an amazing fireworks show.  Our home is right next to a waterfront park that is ideal for watching (and photographing) the event.  The weather here has been sooo crazy with cloudy-rain-storm-sunshine cycles all throughout the summer days so by the time the show started around 9:30pm a lot of folks had cleared out of the soggy park.  Thankfully this made it easy for me to claim the best spot for shooting without any trouble at all 😉

Photographing fireworks is really pretty simple if you have a DSLR and are comfortable shooting in manual mode.  I recently upgraded my camera and haven’t gotten a new remote so instead of using bulb mode this year I just switched my shutter speeds manually during the show.  I really never went higher than 15 or 20 seconds so it wasn’t a problem.  I gave some technical info on my fireworks post last year, but here are a few tips about how I took these shots below:

~use a tripod! I’m in serious need of updating my tripod but I’ve got a cheap rickety old thing that worked just fine.  Just make sure it is substantial enough to hold steady your camera + lens choice.  This is a MUST because you will be shooting at such low shutter speeds!

~use a long lens!  Unless you are going to be right underneath the show a long lens is probably going to work best.  I was pretty far away last year and took most of my shots with my 55-300mm.  This year I chose my Tokina 100mm 2.8 because it is my lightest/smallest/longest lens that my crap tripod would support 🙂

~set ISO to 100! Photographing fireworks is probably the only time you’d ever use an ISO this low at night 😉 low ISO means your photos will be super crisp and gorgeous without any grain.  Plus you need a low ISO because you will be using a long shutter speed and don’t want to overexpose the shot!

~use a small aperture! You want to use an f-stop between f10 and f16 so that everything stays sharp and in focus. Most of my shots were taken at f11 or f13.  The small aperture also plays a role in getting proper exposure since the biggest variable is your shutter speed.

~use a long shutter speed! My shutter speeds ranged from 6 seconds to 15 or 20 seconds, most at about 10 or 13 seconds.  The long shutter speeds help you get multiple bursts in one image, but if the shutter speed is too long you will just end up with a big light blob (and overexpose your photo – fireworks are BRIGHT!).

~use your self timer! or a remote if you have one.  I set mine on a 2 second delay so that I could keep shooting almost continuously throughout the show.  By setting a self timer you avoid camera shake that comes with pressing down the shutter.

~incorporate your surroundings!  Besides the incredible fireworks, some of my favorite aspects about these photos is seeing the homes, landscape, trees, clouds and moving boats around the event.  While the bursts of light are gorgeous, including parts of the surrounding in your perspective make the photos a bit more interesting – IMO <3  Something to consider when choosing your lens – anything longer than 100mm and I couldn’t have achieved this!

I had my white balance set to auto and honestly, these are my JPEGS so I didn’t mess with any settings in ACR.  I did batch them through the same luminosity/saturation action I made and used on my beach photos but other than that these are SOOC.   Hope everyone had a great 4th of July!!  Enjoy!

April is finally here!! I’m beyond excited for my upcoming newborn photography clients to arrive 🙂  With this in mind I thought I would share a few photos of my workspace.

My natural and strobe light photography studio is actually part of our home on Lake Wylie.  We absolutely LOVE living here and just recently added on several rooms, including this space!  During the design process I had several requirements (lots of LIGHT!) knowing that I would be using it for taking photos.  I’m SO happy with the way the addition turned out and love being able to offer this space to my clients for shoots.

When newborn clients come to my studio they have access to a private bath and bedroom for feedings, clothing changes, etc.  Most babies arrive sleeping from the car ride and the session is a breeze!  I love all the gorgeous natural light that streams in from the lake side. ❤  Also, the entire floor has its own AC unit.  I can crank the heat up quickly and easily so babies stay super happy for their session (and of course are a dream to photograph!). Enjoy!
