One of my new years resolutions is to take more photos of the boys with my Nikon. I’m sure this sounds totally bizarre (um yes, I am a family photographer…) but it’s so easy to get lazy with my own kids and just use my oh-so-convenient iPhone (cringe! I know 🙁 ). I finally have a really incredible camera and lenses to play with and don’t always use them…why? Well, I’m a bit of a perfectionist.
How am I going to just take snapshots of my kids playing (generally in clothes that don’t match, but I’m ok with that…) and not critique my composition, lighting, white balance, blah blah blah on every picture I take? Clients know what kind of image they will get from a session with me, but for my own life photos I realized that as long as I am happy with them then they are “perfect”. SO, now I am trying to find a happy median this year: capture my boys growing up before I MISS it, step back and look at the photo for what it’s worth, the *moment* that I caught (even though the lighting might have been terrible), and maybe even have a little fun with my photography and try out some different styles that I wouldn’t normally shoot.
Here are some recent favorites. Maybe I wouldn’t hang these images on my walls but that doesn’t mean I don’t want to keep them! Of course, I am still going to do some special planned sessions with the boys, but I guess I needed a reminder that the everyday moments deserve the “nice” camera too.
Family time is at the top of my priority list and we have had a lot of fun in 2013 so far. I am surrounded by boys and truly blessed! I can’t believe how grown up Will and Charlie look in these photographs. ❤ Enjoy!
